Meghan Markle wore the same butterfly earrings on Friday that her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, wore back in 1986.
The former “Suits” actress showcased the gold stud earrings during the second day of her visit to Colombia with her husband, Prince Harry, who is the son of Diana and King Charles III.
Markle, 42, chose the sentimental jewelry while visiting Colegio La Giralda school in the Santa Fe neighborhood of Bogotá. During the visit, she spoke Spanish to a kindergarten class, toured the campus, and participated in an art session.
Diana, who tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 at the age of 36, originally wore the butterfly earrings during a trip to Canada with her then-husband Charles in May 1986, when Prince Harry was just a toddler.
The choice of earrings seemed especially fitting, as Diana herself worked as a kindergarten teacher in London before marrying King Charles.
Markle complemented the earrings with a simple outfit: a white button-down blouse tucked into skinny black trousers, a beige coat, and matching flats. She pulled her hair back into a bun, letting the earrings sparkle for all to see.
Markle appears to have a special fondness for these dainty earrings, having been seen wearing them twice before.
She first debuted the family heirloom during a visit to Australia in October 2018, shortly after announcing that she and Harry were expecting their first child.
She chose to wear these earrings again in September 2019 during the launch of her capsule collection of women’s workwear, which benefited her patronage Smart Works.
Beyond these earrings, Markle possesses other pieces from Diana’s jewelry collection. One of these is an aquamarine ring, which Diana wore when traveling to her wedding reception, and again to the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Gala in December 2022. Additionally, she owns a cross necklace that Diana was never photographed wearing, and a tennis bracelet, which she sported during her and Harry’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
A source mentioned in May how deeply Diana’s legacy continues to impact Harry, and consequently, Meghan. “Diana remains a prominent force in Harry’s life and as a result, Meghan’s.” The source added, “So much of his work is inspired by his mum, and it’s evident how much she still means to him.”
“A gift to his wife that once belonged to his mother is incredibly meaningful and that isn’t lost on his wife,” the insider noted.
