The Duchess of Sussex is no novice when it comes to statement dressing. Since her days as a Deal or No Deal suitcase girl, Meghan Markle has perfected her personal style, especially excelling in occasionwear.
In 2019, when Prince Harry and Meghan were still very much part of the Royal Family, they were invited to the London premiere of Disney’s ‘The Lion King’. The couple walked the glamorous ‘yellow’ carpet, joining fellow A-list attendees.
Meghan chose a breathtaking dress for the occasion, designed by New York-based designer Jason Wu. Her statement gown pushed the boundaries of royal dress codes.
The Duchess epitomized class in a sleek, sophisticated black gown featuring a daring semi-sheer panel and mesh sleeves. The strapless satin bodice elegantly cascaded into an A-line skirt.
Meghan swept her raven hair into a ballerina bun to accentuate her $2,450 dress, accessorizing with Aquazzura heels and a satin Gucci clutch adorned with a delicate butterfly clasp.
Traditionally, members of the royal family only wear black during periods of official mourning—a custom that has been a part of European royal culture for centuries and reached its peak during Queen Victoria’s reign.
Following the death of her husband Prince Albert, Queen Victoria was plunged into a deep depression and wore black for the remainder of her life, influencing an era of sartorial darkness now associated with mourning.
While there are no official rules stating that royal women can’t wear black outside of mourning periods, it is very rare for them to do so. Yet, Meghan often chose black for official engagements when she and Harry were working royals, defying the traditional royal fashion guidelines.
This choice was likely a conscious decision by the mother-of-two, who might have opted for a monochrome wardrobe to avoid standing out and to direct attention away from herself and onto the causes she supported during her engagements.
