Men Sobbed Seeing Hugh Jackman in Wolverine Costume

Hugh Jackman spent nearly two decades portraying Wolverine in the X-Men films for Fox. Over those years, he did a multitude of things: he fought mutants, made cameos, traveled through time, and battled in various historical wars. He even clashed with a version of Deadpool who had no mouth and took an amnesia bullet to the head. It was a lot to take in.

However, Jackman never did one of the simplest things we’d expect Wolverine to do—wear his iconic yellow and blue costume. The closest he got was in The Wolverine, where the suit made a brief cameo in a briefcase. But Jackman never actually donned the outfit until Marvel’s upcoming film, Deadpool & Wolverine.

According to the executive producer of Deadpool & Wolverine (via HeyUGuys), seeing Jackman in the Wolverine suit for the first time was an emotional experience for even the most jaded Hollywood crew members. In an interview, she recounted their reaction, describing it as “one of the craziest things” she’d ever seen, with some grown men even breaking down in tears.

She detailed the event:

It was the camera test. It was before we started shooting. To see both of those guys, first of all, in costume together was just mind-blowing, but Hugh walking out in the yellow and blue, I mean, there were grown men, like, sobbing on set. So we knew it was a special, very special thing.

I can’t say I cried at the sight of Jackman in tiger stripes, but he does look impressive in the suit! Frankly, it’s absurd that he appeared in seven movies (plus cameos) without ever wearing it. While the early X-Men films had their moments, they were also odd in some ways. One of the strangest choices was their steadfast refusal to put characters in traditional superhero costumes. But then again, this is what happens when the director of your superhero flick bans superhero comics from the set.

Deadpool & Wolverine finally hits theaters next Friday, July 19. You can watch the full interview below:
