Mia Farrow has been outspoken over the years about her acrimonious divorce from Woody Allen, who later married her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, whom he met when she was just 10 years old.
Despite her criticisms of Allen, Mia made a surprising statement regarding those who continue to work with him, despite the serious allegations against him.
During an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, Mia responded to Seath Doane’s question about whether she could separate her experiences as an actor working with Allen from the personal trials that followed. She confirmed she could.
“I completely understand if an actor decides to work with him,” the Rosemary’s Baby star stated. “I’m not one who’d say, ‘Oh, they shouldn’t.'” Mia’s stance is significant given the tumultuous split between her and Allen, who faced harsh criticism for starting a relationship with Soon-Yi, and was accused of sexual abuse by Mia’s daughter Dylan.
Dylan alleged that Allen molested her when she was seven. While charges were never filed, these allegations have cast a long shadow over Allen’s career, prompting numerous actors to denounce him and express regret at having collaborated with him.
Elliot Page, for instance, named working with Allen as the “biggest regret” of their career. They expressed remorse for choosing to work on his film, calling it an “awful mistake.”
Similarly, Greta Gerwig has stated, “If I had known then what I know now, I would not have acted in the film. I have not worked for him again, and I will not work for him again.” She acknowledged that reading Dylan Farrow’s public addresses made her realize she had contributed to another woman’s pain, a realization that deeply affected her.
Dylan Farrow thanked Gerwig publicly for her statements, acknowledging the depth of her feelings and the significance of her support.
Additionally, actors Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Hall have taken a financial stand by donating their salaries from Allen’s films to the Time’s Up movement, a campaign against sexual harassment and assault.
Allen, meanwhile, has dismissed the actors who have denounced him as “silly,” suggesting they are uninformed and merely adopting a “fashionable” stance. He remarked to The Guardian, “Who in the world is not against child molestation? That’s how actors and actresses are, and [denouncing me] became the fashionable thing to do, like everybody suddenly eating kale.”
