Michael Mann is gearing up to make a sequel to his iconic 1995 film Heat and has provided an update on the timeline for its production.

In a recent interview, the acclaimed filmmaker disclosed that he is currently working on the screenplay for the sequel, which is based on his novel Heat 2. Mann aims to begin shooting by late 2024 or early 2025. However, he refrained from sharing any details about the cast, stating, “I can’t talk about that.”

The original Heat, a crime thriller, featured a stellar cast including Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Jon Voight, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Diana Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, Mykelti Williamson, Wes Studi, and Ted Levine. Mann himself wrote and directed the film, which centers on the intense conflict between an LAPD detective, played by Pacino, and a seasoned thief, portrayed by De Niro.

The upcoming film, Heat 2, will draw from Mann’s novel of the same name and will serve both as a prequel and a sequel to the original movie. The narrative alternates between two timelines. One storyline follows Chris Shiherlis as he attempts to elude the LAPD and Detective Vincent Hanna after a bank heist goes awry. The other takes place in 1988 Chicago.

Rumors suggest that Adam Driver and Austin Butler are being considered to assume the roles previously played by De Niro and Kilmer. Mann recently collaborated with Driver on his latest project, Ferrari. When asked in October 2023 if he would team up with Driver for the Heat sequel, Mann was coy but positive.

“Perhaps. We don’t talk about that yet. Let me put it this way: Adam and I got along like a house on fire [on Ferrari],” Mann commented. “We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other, and we had a great time working together artistically.”
