Michael Rainey Jr. & Chloe Bailey to Lead New Horror Movie “Goons”

Power Book II: Ghost star Michael Rainey Jr. and Grammy Award-nominated singer and actress Chloe Bailey are set to star in a new horror film titled Goons. More on this upcoming movie below.

Production on Goons is currently underway in New Orleans, Louisiana. This film is from American filmmaker Gerard McMurray, who co-wrote the script with Hodge K. Johnson. McMurray is also set to direct the film. He is best known for co-writing and directing the Netflix drama film Burning Sands and directing the action horror film The First Purge.

The film producer and director Tommy Oliver will produce and fully finance Goons through his Confluential Films banner. The movie will be produced under Confluential’s new genre label, New Fear Unlocked Productions. Gerard McMurray’s Buppie Productions will also collaborate in producing the film alongside Confluential/New Fear Unlocked.

Plot details for Goons are being kept under wraps, but the movie is said to take place against the eerie backdrop of Louisiana’s cane fields and plantations. Being a New Orleans native, McMurray describes this film as a “love letter” to his hometown.

In a statement to Deadline, Gerard McMurray shared his excitement about making Goons.

“I’m beyond excited to direct a film in the horror genre. Goons is a love letter to my hometown of New Orleans, and a deeply personal story for me. Producing this film along with Confluential/New Fear Unlocked shows the power of Black storytellers with a collaborative spirit.”

Tommy Oliver also expressed his enthusiasm about collaborating with McMurray on this project.

“I can’t wait for audiences to see what Gerard and I are cooking up with the kick-ass squad we’ve assembled. I also couldn’t be more excited to kick off New Fear Unlocked with this film from such a talented director.”

Michael Rainey Jr. is best known for his role as Tariq St. Patrick in the crime drama series Power and its spinoff Power Book II: Ghost. His other acting roles include Michael Burset in the comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black, and appearances in movies such as LUV, Barbershop: The Next Cut, Amateur, and 211.

Chloe Bailey is widely recognized as part of the award-winning singing duo, Chloe X Halle, along with her sister, Halle Bailey (The Little Mermaid). Chloe has also ventured into acting, starring in the psychological horror series Swarm and the supernatural horror film The Exorcism. Apart from Goons, she will be seen next in the upcoming crime drama series Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, which is set for release on Peacock on September 5, 2024.
