Michelle Obama’s Fashion Choices That Didn’t Hit the Mark

Michelle Obama has evolved from lawyer to first lady to style icon. However, even the most chic fashionistas can occasionally miss the mark. Here’s a rundown of 12 Michelle Obama looks that didn’t quite hit the target.

On election night in 2008, Michelle Obama wore a black and red Narciso Rodriguez dress that divided fans. The bold criss-cross design and color palette were labeled by some as foreboding and out of place for the historic occasion. Designer Rodriguez admired her willingness to take a fashion risk, even if it sparked controversy.

For Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration, Michelle chose a yellow tweed by Isabel Toledo, reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy. Yet, her glossy white tights and retro vibe seemed at odds with the promise of a brighter future her husband’s campaign had championed.

In March 2009, for her official White House portrait, Michelle opted for a sleeveless black dress, which felt a bit too informal given the winter season and the seriousness of the occasion.

Meeting Queen Elizabeth II in 2009, the first lady donned a black cardigan over a two-tone dress. Critics argued the casual look was inappropriate for such a formal occasion, though the Queen seemed unfazed, even sharing a warm gesture with Michelle.

On a separate 2009 trip to the U.K., Michelle’s outfit of a sparkling cardigan and mint skirt while meeting Sarah Brown, wife of the British Prime Minister, contrasted sharply with Sarah’s subdued look. Vogue defended the mismatched ensembles as a reflection of their different personalities.

In another UK visit, Michelle wore an argyle cardigan over a blue dress at the Royal Opera House. The look felt too preppy for the prestigious venue, though Sherman of CBS News suggested it was an effort to connect with a younger generation.

At a 2011 White House event aimed at promoting American-Chinese trade, Michelle wore a red Alexander McQueen gown. Critics like Oscar de la Renta felt she should have chosen an American or Chinese designer instead to better fit the occasion.

In Saudi Arabia in 2015, Michelle’s choice to not wear a headscarf during a visit after the death of King Abdullah was viewed as disrespectful by some. Although foreigners were not required to cover their heads, many felt adhering to local customs would have shown respect.

When appearing on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2015, Michelle’s wide-legged white trousers were not practical for dancing, leading to some awkward moments. Despite nailing the choreography, her choice of outfit was less than ideal for the occasion.

Michelle attended a State of the Union address in a Michael Kors suit identical to one worn by “The Good Wife” character Alicia Florrick. While it was an unexpected match, it highlighted the strange world of fashion overlaps.

During her 2018 book tour, Michelle wore a double denim look while reading to children in Los Angeles. The ensemble was reminiscent of early 2000s fashion, which was not yet in vogue again, making it an unusual choice.

At the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Michelle wore a futuristic pantsuit inspired by science fiction. While trendy, the outfit felt out of place for an event centered on hope and positive change.
