Michigan Rapper Becomes First to Go Platinum in Four Different Decades

Most states boast a rich musical history and have produced some of the industry’s finest artists. Some states and cities, however, are more synonymous with certain music genres, often influenced by the lifestyle of those areas. Detroit stands out as one of the few cities claiming a footprint in virtually every genre of music.

Although Detroit is a versatile city musically, it has particularly strong ties to genres like hip hop, jazz, soul, R&B, and rap. Many artists from Detroit or those with ties to the city have significantly influenced these genres. While Detroit is famously known as the Motor City due to Ford, let’s not overlook the monumental impact Motown has had on the music world. One rapper, in particular, has been putting Michigan on the musical map for over 40 years and continues to make history.

Indeed, there’s hardly any surprise when guessing the rapper in question—it’s Eminem. Eminem has been making waves in the rap game for almost four decades, having started his journey back in the 90s. It feels like just yesterday that he teamed up with Dr. Dre and the West Coast crew and shot to stardom.

We are familiar with the dramatized version of his life from the movie 8 Mile, which showcased his rough upbringing and how rap music became his escape. He gained recognition by pouring his life stories into his music, never shying away from dissing anyone, even his own mother.

Now, Eminem can solidify his status as one of the greatest of all time (GOAT) in the rap game, having achieved something no other rapper has managed. Eminem is the first rapper to have an album go platinum in four different decades. No rapper in history has seen their albums achieve platinum status across more than two decades. Eminem stands in a league of his own, continuing to deliver compelling rhymes and stories through his music to this day.

Additionally, Eminem has reached another milestone that might never be surpassed. He is the best-selling rapper of all time, with over 220 million albums sold throughout his illustrious career, earning him a spot in the Hall of Fame.
