Momentum grows for Raygun to become popular collectible toy; prototypes for sale

  • Breaking routine went viral at the Paris Olympics
  • Fans want to see Raygun get her own figurine
  • Dedicated fans can already create their own

The push is on for viral Australian breakdancing star Ray Gun to be immortalised as a collectible toy – and it could become reality.

Following Raygun’s viral performance at the Paris Olympics, where she kangaroo hopped and T-Rex-posed her way to last place, there have been Facebook and Reddit posts calling for a Funko Pop figurine to be made in her honour.

Funko Pops have become a cultural phenomenon, with a massive global fan base and frequent collaborations with major franchises across movies, television, video games, and more.

Funko Pop originally started in 1998 when a toy collector aimed to create a mascot toy for a restaurant franchise in Michigan. The company evolved under new ownership in 2005, leading to the creation of the first Funko Pop figurines.

Today, there are over 8,300 unique Funko Pop designs, ranging from popular culture icons to niche collectibles, contributing to the company’s impressive revenue of $1.32 billion in 2022.

Now some fans believe Raygun should be the next to be immortalised.

“I think a Pop of the Australian Breakdancer in this Olympics would sell out,” one fan posted.

“Lmao that’s so cool. What category would it even fall in? Icons?” asked another.

“I’d buy this instantly,” declared another.

While there has been no official word from Funko on a Raygun figurine, dedicated fans can download a file to 3D print their own version.

A digital mockup was posted on Facebook and one budding businessperson created an off-brand 3D print version which is available for sale online now.

Some believe the Raygun Funko Pop could trigger an entire Olympics range, including other meme-worthy athletes like Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec.

“Next we would need the Turkish shooter (cat included), the gorgeous Italian girl with block of cheese [Giorgia Villa], and the precious Chinese girl [Zhou Yaqin] biting the medal,” suggested one fan.

“I want all the Olympians I have come to love, made funko style. Especially the pole vaulter,” posted another.

“Can we please get Olympic Snoop Dogg funkos with all his different outfits he did?” asked another.

But not everybody was as thrilled with the idea, saying Funko Pop status should only be awarded to athletes that achieve something beyond internet notoriety.

“And it will end up in the landfill like the last ones. I love Funko but they’ll put out anything at this point,” one person posted.

“No, I don’t think her performance needs anymore attention. But the athletes who put together awesome routines would deserve to be made into Funko Pops,” added another.

“Praising someone who stole an opportunity off someone who deserved it. Someone who cheated the system. Good job,” fumed another.

“Good dog chew toy. Save it for the true Olympic heroes,” added yet another.
