For nearly two decades, people have been enjoying “Got Talent” competitions all over the world, inspired by the first “America’s Got Talent” in 2006. Thanks to social media and YouTube, we can enjoy the most memorable auditions over and over again.

Take, for instance, Taryn Charles’ audition on the 2024 season of “Britain’s Got Talent.”

Charles, a music teacher who works with special needs kids, brought one of her students and their parent to be part of the audience during her audition. When asked why she wanted to be on “Britain’s Got Talent,” she humbly replied, “I love to make people smile, and I think my voice is alright.”

Talk about an understatement.

Standing patiently as the music started, Charles shook her hand by her side a few times, clearly getting some nerves out. However, the moment she began to sing the first line, “Looking out on the morning rain, I used to feel so uninspired…”, it became evident that her rich, raspy voice and easy stage presence were extraordinary.

The performance only got better from there. Covering “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman,” a song written by Carole King and famously covered by Aretha Franklin, Charles blew everyone away. The audience and judges were so impressed that her performance earned her not one but two standing ovations. Judge Bruno Tonioli was so moved that he smashed the Golden Buzzer before the judges could even offer their feedback.

What made this performance even more memorable was Charles’ humble and unassuming nature before and after her sensational performance. If you didn’t watch until the very end, you might have missed her hilariously real comment, “I think I’ve wet myself,” which added to her endearing charm.

One commenter wrote, “WOW I was blown away with her angelic and powerful voice. And yet she is so humble and has a beautiful soul. Plus, I have never in my life seen a double standing ovation; she so deserves a golden buzzer, wishing her the best success.”

Another commented, “This is how you do an audition, stunning tone to her voice… if anyone deserves a chance it’s this lady… BOOM!!”

“This was so inspirational. Taryn, I am in tears,” shared another user. “I know what it feels like to struggle with self-worth. You are a mirror to show me that those people are not always right. You are phenomenally gifted, and you have an amazing career as a professional singer ahead of you! Blessings!”

Talent competition judges often warn contestants about the challenge of singing songs performed by big vocal divas. We’ve seen many singers attempt to belt out Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey songs and fall flat. It’s not easy to sing an iconic song most people associate with Aretha Franklin—the Queen of Soul and Rolling Stone’s #1 singer of all time—and hope to impress anyone. Yet, Taryn Charles managed to make the song her own, wowing everyone with her unique voice.

We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this humble music teacher as she makes her way through the “Britain’s Got Talent” gauntlet. It’s a heck of a way to kick it off.
