My Favorite Country Music Discoveries of 2024

This year has been exceptional for country music, showcasing both commercial success and a wealth of talent that goes beyond the mainstream. While discussions around the genre often highlight the meteoric rise of stars like Morgan Wallen, the reinvigorated presence of female artists such as Lainey Wilson and Megan Moroney, and the dominance of acts like Luke Combs, many of the year’s best music has come from outside traditional Nashville channels.

Independent artists are carving out their own paths without compromising substance for success. The Red Clay Strays’ “Made By These Moments” stands out as an exemplary album, while Colby Acuff’s “American Son” is likely to grace many “Best Of” lists. Add to that new releases from celebrated artists like Sturgill Simpson, Sierra Ferrell, Shane Smith & The Saints, Charley Crockett, John Moreland, Carly Pearce, and Koe Wetzel, and it’s clear that 2024 is packed with remarkable music.

In my search for fresh voices, I’ve come across several artists who have quickly become staples in my playlist. These discoveries span a variety of styles and backgrounds, yet all share an ability to create deeply affecting music.

First up is Leon Majcen. Whether it’s nostalgia for life in Florida or his ability to create vivid, emotional worlds through his music, Leon’s self-titled album has been on repeat for me. His style evokes a Hemingway-like storytelling that transports listeners to serene, sun-drenched coastal scenes.

Over in the UK, Jack Browning has been proving that country music isn’t confined to America. His debut album “Red Eye Radio” from 2023 sets a high bar, and with his new single “High Hopes,” he’s tapping into themes of aging and existential reflection that resonate deeply with listeners in their late twenties.

Thanks to a feature by Zach Bryan, Canadian artist Noeline Hofmann has entered the scene with a bang. Her contributions to “The Belting Bronco Sessions” and the duet “Purple Gas” have already made waves. Her recent single “Lightning In July (Prairie Fire)” and a solo version of “Purple Gas” hint at a promising music career ahead.

Wyatt Flores is another artist who deserves recognition. Despite being new to me, his song “Please Don’t Go” from 2022 and the fan-favorite “Milwaukee” have quickly shown his potential. At just 23 years old, Wyatt is poised to become a major star in the country music world.

Kashus Culpepper’s voice carries an incredible depth that sets him apart. His song “After Me?” is one of the standout tracks of the year. His rise, buoyed by viral social media posts, is a testament to how genuine talent can break through in today’s digital age. Fans are eagerly awaiting more music from this exceptional artist.

Josiah & The Bonnevilles, featuring Josiah Leming, bring a wealth of nostalgia and talent to the table. Their album “Endurance” has been a constant in my rotation. Josiah’s ability to craft memorable music is evident, even if it occasionally leads to my wife tiring of my endless singing.

Willow Avalon is a recent addition to my list of favorites. Her collaboration with Maggie Antone on “Yodelayheewho” is irresistibly catchy. Willow’s commitment to her unique musical vision is commendable, making her a standout in a crowded field.

Finally, Fox N’ Vead from North Carolina have impressed with their energetic live performances and solid studio work. Their brand of alt-country is captivating, and seeing them live is an experience that elevates their music to another level.

This year’s bounty of new music and emerging artists in country music is nothing short of remarkable. Each of these talents brings something unique to the genre, ensuring that it remains vibrant and diverse.
