National Guard Deployed to Combat Raging Wildfire in California

Firefighting teams in Southern California are working tirelessly to combat the Line Fire, which has burned 23,714 acres and is currently 5% contained. The fire continues to threaten a staggering 38,002 structures, as reported by Cal Fire. Fortunately, there have been no reports of building damage or additional injuries beyond the three firefighters previously hurt.

As the situation escalates, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the California National Guard will be providing support for the ongoing firefighting efforts. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown as crews continue their battle against the blaze.

“We’re aggressively deploying resources to this incident,” Governor Newsom stated. “This includes additional air and ground support from the California National Guard, as well as nearly 2,000 firefighters, around 200 engines, and various air assets already on the ground.” He emphasized California’s commitment to supporting the affected communities.

Fire activity was most significant on Monday, particularly along the northern and eastern edges of the blaze. Cal Fire has advised that the fire could remain active overnight due to critically dry vegetation. The forecast for Tuesday predicts stronger winds, which may exacerbate the fire’s spread and enable it to reach new areas.

Despite the active conditions, there is hope that mid-week cooling temperatures could help moderate the fire’s intensity and increase moisture levels in the surrounding vegetation.

Since starting on September 5, the Line Fire has posed considerable challenges due to its location in steep, rugged terrain, making access for firefighters difficult. Crews are engaged in constructing “control lines” aimed at containing the fire and preventing further expansion.

The intensity of the situation has led to evacuation orders for approximately 8,800 structures, with an additional 29,200 facing evacuation warnings. Fire officials are diligently monitoring the conditions and assessing the potential risks to safety as the fire threat continues.

To assist with firefighting operations, the National Guard is deploying vital resources such as four UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, which will be used for water bucket drops. Additionally, two C-130 aircraft equipped with Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems will also be involved in the effort.

Moreover, about 80 troops have been dispatched to assist the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department with traffic control in the evacuated areas, organized into four hand crews consisting of 20 personnel each, along with a military police company.
