Neighbor Charged with Murder After Nurse Found Dead Days Post Hawaii Wedding

Melissa Jubane, 32, was found dead on September 7 just days after getting married in Hawaii.

An Oregon nurse who went missing shortly after her honeymoon was discovered dead in her apartment on Friday. Her neighbor has since been charged with her murder.

Melissa Jubane, 32, had not shown up for her shift at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland on September 4, which raised alarm among her coworkers, friends, and family, according to the Beaverton Police Department.

Following her absence, a wellness check was conducted at her home in Beaverton. However, police could not locate her, describing her lack of communication as “unusual and alarming.”

On September 7, Jubane’s body was discovered, leading to the arrest of her neighbor, 27-year-old Bryce Johnathan Schubert. He has been charged with her murder.

While specific details surrounding the location of her remains remain undisclosed, authorities have not clarified the nature of the relationship between Jubane and Schubert.

The Beaverton Police Department confirmed that an active investigation is underway. They expressed gratitude to community members who participated in the search for Jubane.

At the time of her death, Jubane worked as a nurse at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Schubert had a brief employment history as a nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center from September 2022 to October 2023. Notably, he was not employed at the same facility as Jubane.

St. Vincent Hospital
Melissa Jubane was reported missing after failing to show up for her shift at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland.

Jubane’s tragic death occurred only a few days after her wedding to Bryan Llantero in Hawaii on August 26. The couple met a decade ago at Mokuleia Beach and maintained a long-distance relationship between Hawaii and Kalihi.

After their wedding, they returned to the Pacific Northwest on September 1 and spent Labor Day together. At the time of her disappearance, Jubane was at her apartment while her husband was staying with family in Bremerton, Washington.

Her absence on September 4 was concerning for her family. Llantero’s mother, Imelda, mentioned, “There was no Melissa. Her bag, wallet, and keys are missing, and her car is still parked in the parking garage.”

The last communication Bryan had with his new wife was around 6 a.m. on the morning of her disappearance. Imelda stated that the family is heartbroken over the loss.

“I miss her,” Imelda reflected. “I’m so happy Bryan met her. I told Bryan to always love her. They were happy, very happy.”

In response to this tragic event, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist Jubane’s family with funeral costs. As of Monday morning, the campaign has raised $72,860.

The campaign highlighted that “Melissa was not only a loving daughter, friend, and community member, but also a dedicated nurse who cared deeply for her family, friends, and patients.”

It further emphasized that she made a significant impact in the lives of many through her kindness, compassion, and selflessness.
