Netflix occasionally makes controversial decisions — from hosting content featuring dubious claims to canceling beloved shows like David Fincher’s Mindhunter, while investing heavily in projects by figures such as Zack Snyder. However, the streaming giant deserves recognition for its recent sound decision: renewing two of its standout 2024 releases.
The renewal of Supacell and The Gentlemen might not have been entirely predictable, despite their popularity. Both shows topped Netflix’s US and global charts for weeks, and the British superhero drama Supacell boasts an impeccable 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score, even two months post-release. That said, with Netflix, certainty only comes with an official announcement.
Critics and fans alike have praised Supacell and The Gentlemen. Both shows crafted satisfying single-season narratives but also paved the way for future storylines. The Gentlemen, which is slated to start filming its new season in 2025, wrapped up its plot with a series of double-crosses and twists that left viewers eager to follow Eddie Horniman, played by Theo James, on his next adventures.
Throughout the season, Eddie’s schemes are primarily driven by the need to disentangle his family and estate from a cannabis operation run by Kaya Scodelario’s character and her imprisoned father. In his journey, Eddie discovers a surprising affinity and talent for his gangster lifestyle.
On the other hand, Supacell wrapped its storyline on a dramatic note. The series, created by Rapman, follows five superpowered South Londoners. The season concluded with Michael vowing vengeance against a shadowy group targeting supacell holders, setting up a thrilling second season. “When I come back, they’re all gonna f*****g pay,” he promised. According to Rapman, he has already outlined the story up to Season 3 and is fully prepared to continue the narrative.
Netflix’s decision to renew these series underlines its commitment to building engaging, high-quality content that resonates with viewers globally. While the platform sometimes faces criticism for its content choices, these renewals demonstrate its capability to recognize and invest in successful storytelling.
