Netflix Reveals South African Programming Slate at MIP Africa

Netflix introduced its upcoming South African content lineup at MIP Africa on Tuesday. The exciting slate includes a variety of series and films that are set to capture the interest of viewers both locally and globally.

Among the new series is “Love Never Lies: South Africa,” a reality show that will feature six couples testing their trust through lie detector tests. This engaging series will premiere on November 29.

In the realm of films, viewers can look forward to “Happiness Is,” a new installment in the romantic comedy franchise. This film follows a group of friends as they navigate their personal challenges and is set to debut on October 18.

“Umjolo,” a four-part anthology series, also made the slate. The first film in this series, “Umjolo: The Gone Girl,” will release on November 8 and centers on a young woman whose engagement takes an unexpected turn.

Adding to the lineup is “Disaster Holiday,” a comedy that tells the story of a workaholic trying to prove his parenting skills during a family vacation. This film is slated for release on December 13.

Netflix’s VP of content for the Middle East and Africa, Ben Amadasun, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are incredibly excited to continue strengthening our relationships with our production partners in South Africa and bringing diverse and authentic local stories by local storytellers to our local and global audiences. We have seen South African stories not only be loved locally, but they have also found a fandom in many countries around the world. This is only a small taste of what’s to come next on Netflix as we continue our work to bring local South African and international stories to entertain our 278 million members around the world.”

On a different note, the 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), scheduled for October 2-11, has announced its jury lineup for the Jiseok, BIFF Mecenat, and Sonje Awards. This year’s jury includes several notable names in the film industry.

Christian Jeune from the Cannes Film Festival, alongside filmmakers Prasanna Vithanage and Shin Suwon, will be in charge of judging the Kim Jiseok Award. This award honors new features from well-established Asian filmmakers.

The BIFF Mecenat Award, which focuses on documentaries, will be judged by filmmakers Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Jéro Yun, and Fujioka Asako from the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival.

Finally, the Sonje Award, recognizing top Korean and Asian shorts, will have its winners selected by filmmakers Lim Daehyung, Constance Tsang, and Yamanaka Yoko.
