Netflix Takes Aggressive Action Against Show and Movie Leaks

After more than 10 upcoming Netflix movies and shows were leaked online, the company has issued a response. Earlier this week, several unreleased Netflix anime TV series and a movie began appearing on torrent sites and social media. The source of the leak was initially uncertain, but more details are now emerging.

As of now, the list of leaked projects includes: Ranma 1/2 , Dan Da Dan , Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- season 3, TERMINATOR ZERO , Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain , Plankton: The Movie , Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld , Fairly Odd Parents: A New Wish! , Spellbound , Arcane season 2, and Heartstopper season 3.

Netflix released the following statement to the press on Friday:

“One of our post-production partners has been compromised, and footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online,” a Netflix spokesperson wrote. “Our team is aggressively taking action to have it taken down.”

The source of the leak has been identified as IYUNO, a global entertainment technology and localization company that counts both Netflix and Riot Games among its clients. IYUNO shared a statement regarding the security incident on their website:

“Iyuno is aware of a recent security issue, involving unauthorized access to confidential content. Protecting our clients’ confidentiality and ensuring the security of their content is our highest priority. We are actively investigating this security breach to mitigate any potential risks and identify the responsible parties. When there are material changes or information, we will make further statements.”

According to reports, security firm MomentPort, which collaborates with one of the affected studios, discovered the breach on August 7. Their internal tools monitoring the web for unauthorized publications detected unreleased workprints of their client’s projects on 4chan. This initiated an in-depth investigation.

“This discovery initiated an investigation, and we assigned a researcher to determine whether this breach had affected our client,” wrote MomentPort CTO Travis Doering. “We found that over 45 media files had already been leaked from a wide range of distribution companies. Some of these media files included Spellbound from Netflix, set to release in November 2024, Plankton: The Movie from Nickelodeon Animation Studios, expected to release in 2025; Arcane Strife from Riot Games, expected to release in November 2024; and even the reboot of Barney’s World from Turner Broadcasting, expected to release sometime this year, in 2024.”

While Netflix is working to remove the leaked material as quickly as possible, it may take some time to fully understand the extent of the security breach.

The breach has raised significant concerns within the entertainment industry about the security of highly anticipated projects. Both IYUNO and Netflix are committed to addressing the breach and preventing future incidents.

This situation has highlighted the importance of stringent security measures in the entertainment business, especially as content piracy and unauthorized leaks continue to pose serious threats. With many eagerly awaiting the official release of these shows and movies, the leak has raised concerns over potential spoilers and the financial implications for the companies involved.

Going forward, both Netflix and its partners are expected to invest more heavily in improving their security protocols. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that exist even with reputable companies and underscores the need for robust digital protection strategies.

As investigations continue, the priority remains on protecting the intellectual property of the affected companies and ensuring that such breaches do not recur in the future.
