Netflix’s Terminator Zero Unveils Franchise’s Triumphant Return, See Proof

The Terminator franchise became a classic in the sci-fi and action genres with the release of its first movie in 1984. The second film, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, is considered by many to be the high point of the series, often viewed as even better than the original. Although the franchise has struggled to reclaim its former glory, it is now making an exciting comeback with the anime series Terminator Zero.

This marks the first time the Terminator series has been adapted into an anime, and it’s a rare instance of the franchise being presented as a series rather than a movie. Many fans loved the 2008 series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, making it surprising that it took this long for another small-screen adaptation. The fresh direction of Terminator Zero already has fans buzzing with anticipation.

Terminator Zero will present an entirely new story, separate from the existing Terminator narratives. Set in Japan during 1997, the storyline aligns with the franchise’s timeline, marking the year when Skynet goes online and begins its mission to eradicate humanity.

Terminator Zero will follow Malcolm Lee, a scientist developing an AI program he believes could rival America’s Skynet. However, tragedy strikes when a terminator, voiced by Timothy Olyphant, is sent back in time with the mission to assassinate Lee.

Lee must flee for his life and protect his children. Luckily, the resistance also sends someone back in time: Eiko, whose mission is to save Lee. Coming from the year 2022, Eiko aims to protect Lee and prevent him from activating his alternative to Skynet. Terminator Zero will explore these events across eight episodes.

The anime comes from Production I.G., a studio renowned for producing classic anime shows and movies. Their portfolio includes the 1995 anime movie Ghost in the Shell, multiple Neon Genesis Evangelion movies, and series like Eden of the East and Guilty Crown. Having such a well-respected studio on board has bolstered fans’ enthusiasm for the series’ animation quality.

One unique aspect of Terminator Zero is its Japanese setting, where ordinary people are not allowed to own guns. This means the series will not feature the typical shootouts seen in the movies, offering a fresh dynamic and distinguishing itself from prior installments.

Terminator Zero premieres on Netflix on August 29, a date fans will recognize as the fictional Judgement Day from the movies.
