New Massive Bob Dylan Set Chronicles 1974 Tour With The Band

Bob Dylan’s historic return to touring in 1974 will be captured in an expansive new box set, Bob Dylan – The 1974 Live Recordings. The 27-disc collection includes 431 tracks, with 417 of them previously unreleased, chronicling Dylan’s tour with the Band. This significant tour marked his first prolonged stint on the road since his controversial 1966 tour, which also featured the Band.

Scheduled for release on September 20, the box set compiles 27 shows from that year’s performances with the Band. Notably, a few weeks into the tour, Dylan and the Band released Planet Waves, their first studio album together. This tour was also Dylan’s first foray into arena performances, consisting of 30 shows over 42 days and frequently featuring both afternoon and evening sets each day.

Mirroring the format of 2016’s The 1966 Live Recordings, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of that pivotal tour with a 36-CD set, The 1974 Live Recordings will compile all professionally recorded shows from the tour. Music fans at the time had high anticipation, as Dylan had only played a handful of live sets since 1966, making this comeback all the more significant.

The tour began on January 3 in Chicago and concluded on February 14 in Inglewood, California. In between, Dylan and the Band performed in cities like Philadelphia, Toronto, Atlanta, and Seattle, among others. This tour has been acknowledged as the first major arena tour of its kind, laying the groundwork for future large-scale tours.

A double live album, Before the Flood, was released in June 1974, culled from the tour’s recordings. The shows were captured on a stereo soundboard mix, using both 1/4" tape and cassette. Toward the end of the tour, Asylum Records’ David Geffen commissioned recordings on multitrack tape for the eventual release of Before the Flood. The new box set includes all these recordings, featuring the cassettes, 1/4” tapes, and the multitrack recordings, newly mixed for this compilation.

Fans can get a taste of the collection through the performance of "Forever Young" from the afternoon show in Seattle on February 9, which is available to listen to online. The tour’s setlists included deep cuts like "Hero Blues," famous tracks such as "Lay Lady Lay" and "Like a Rolling Stone," and songs from Dylan’s expansive catalog spanning the ’60s through the Planet Waves era, including "Nobody ‘Cept You" and "Forever Young."
