New rules unveiled for Joey Chestnut vs. Takeru Kobayashi hot dog showdown

The upcoming matchup between Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi will look quite different from their last encounter.

On Thursday, Netflix revealed the interesting rules for the highly anticipated hot dog eating contest between Chestnut and Kobayashi scheduled for September 2. The announcement came via a post on their X page, featuring actor Rob Riggle laying out the competition’s rules, which will be streamed live on Netflix.

Both competitors will have 10 minutes to consume as many hot dogs as possible. However, they are not allowed to separate the hot dogs from the buns, nor can they dunk the hot dogs or buns in any liquid.

Additionally, they will have 30 seconds after the 10-minute timer expires to finish swallowing what’s in their mouths. Any leftover crumbs may be weighed to determine the winner. In case of a tie, there will be a three-minute “overtime” where the competitors will eat as many hot dogs as possible. If still tied, the match will go to a dog-off, with the first one to finish five hot dogs declared the winner.

Chestnut, a 16-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest champion, last faced Kobayashi, a six-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest champion, back in 2009. While that was also a 10-minute competition, separating the dogs from the buns and dunking them in liquid for faster consumption was a key strategy. This time, the legendary eaters won’t have that advantage.

Kobayashi, 46, hasn’t competed in Nathan’s contest since his 2009 face-off against Chestnut, who is now 40. Chestnut also didn’t participate in this year’s Nathan’s event due to sponsorship issues. However, in a few days, the two icons will finally give fans the rematch they have been awaiting for over a decade.
