New Rumor Reveals Possible Green Lantern Actors if Brolin Declines

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Green Lantern TV series, simply titled Lanterns, has apparently offered the role of Hal Jordan to Josh Brolin. Known for his roles as Thanos in the MCU, Cable in Deadpool 2, Jonah Hex, and Dwight in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Brolin is no stranger to the realm of comic book and superhero characters. The Lanterns series, inspired by the likes of HBO’s True Detective, will feature Hal Jordan as a seasoned Green Lantern veteran. Now, another rumor has emerged suggesting potential actors if Brolin declines the role.

According to Jeff Sneider’s TheInSneider newsletter, if Brolin turns down the role of Hal Jordan (though there’s currently no indication he will), two other actors are being considered. Sneider reports that Academy Award-winner Matthew McConaughey is “next in line” for the role if Brolin passes, followed by Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor. Casting for Lanterns has yet to be confirmed by Warner Bros. and DC, but the development of the series is ongoing.

Fans may remember that Matthew McConaughey was previously considered for another comic book role, having been offered the part of Ego the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Although McConaughey didn’t accept that role, he recently lent his voice to a cowboy variant of Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine. This wouldn’t be new territory for Ewan McGregor either, who played the role of Black Mask in the Birds of Prey movie.

Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective: Night Country) has been confirmed to serve as the showrunner for Lanterns, developed alongside Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers) and Eisner-award winning comic scribe Tom King. Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops who are drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Fortunately for DC fans, the wait for a live-action Green Lantern in James Gunn’s DCU won’t hinge solely on this TV series moving forward. Nathan Fillion is set to debut as Green Lantern Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman movie, scheduled for release in July 2025. It remains unclear if Fillion will reprise his role in the Lanterns TV series.
