The ESPYS always cover the top sports stories from the past year. This year, Nikki Glaser made sure to include Scottie Scheffler’s notable run-in with a police officer.

After Glaser’s impressive performance at Netflix’s The Roast of Tom Brady in May, she was invited to continue her sports coverage at the ESPYS. She took the stage to present the award for best male athlete.

“The nominees include peak athletes who push their bodies to the limit, and also a golfer,” Glaser began, with a chuckle. “I’m sorry, Scottie. I do know that golfing is hard. I mean, there’s putting, chipping, and driving over a cop’s leg.”

The joke received a hearty laugh from the audience at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. It’s not every day that someone roasts Scheffler for his driving skills. Maybe his putting, but definitely not his driving. However, this was before he was accused of running over a police officer.

Earlier this year, before Round 2 of the PGA Championship, Scheffler faced felony charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer with his vehicle. A detective from the Louisville Metro Police Department, Bryan Gillis, arrested Scheffler, claiming the golfer dragged him with his car and disregarded traffic orders. The charges were later dropped after video footage of the incident surfaced, showing Gillis was not dragged as initially claimed.

Although Gillis was not dragged, the incident did leave his $80 work pants “damaged beyond repair.” It’s an amusing detail that adds a bit of levity to an otherwise serious situation.

Sadly, Scheffler did not win the award for best male athlete, sparing us what could have been an awkward but potentially hilarious acceptance speech following Glaser’s roast. Instead, Patrick Mahomes took home the honor, and there’s not much material to roast Mahomes over.
