The 1990s brought some of the most iconic anime stories ever. During this golden era, fans were introduced to releases like Trigun, Perfect Blue, Ghost In The Shell, Princess Mononoke, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and One Piece. One standout anime from this decade, Ninja Scroll, is set to make a triumphant return to theaters in celebration of its thirtieth anniversary.

Back then, Ninja Scroll was popular enough to inspire a television series sequel, Ninja Scroll: The Series. Although it remains an influential anime, there hasn’t been any news on a continuation or reboot of Jubei’s tale—until now.

Anime Expo recently shared exciting details about Ninja Scroll’s big comeback. The thirtieth anniversary theatrical release will be part of Iconic Events Releasing’s 2024-2025 AX Cinema Nights series. This special event will screen across over 500 U.S. theaters on September 11, 12, and 15, offering both Japanese versions with English subtitles and English-dubbed versions. AX Cinema Nights is a year-round movie event series, celebrating both new and classic anime films and bringing them to theaters across North America. The series aims to provide the passionate fan community with immersive experiences beyond the annual Anime Expo.

If Ninja Scroll is a film you’ve never seen, it’s a cornerstone of the genre that introduced many to anime. The story begins with Jubei saving a young ninja woman from a dire situation, only to find that this rescue marks the beginning of a larger journey. The duo investigates mysterious deaths in a village, unraveling a conspiracy of demonic proportions. As they get closer to the truth, demonic forces are determined to silence Jubei and his companion for good.
