No More Seasons Planned for ‘My Lady Jane’

My Lady Jane, the genre-bending historical fantasy drama centered on Lady Jane Grey, will not see a second season on Prime Video. The series was canceled after just one season, which premiered on June 27 in a binge-watch format. This information was confirmed by Deadline.

The series was adapted by Gemma Burgess from a 2016 novel written by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton, and Cynthia Hand. According to the official synopsis, My Lady Jane reimagines the tragic tale of Lady Jane Grey, the young Tudor noblewoman who became Queen of England for nine days before being executed in 1553. The creators pitched it as an epic and adventurous love story set in an alternate universe combining elements of action, history, fantasy, comedy, and romance, offering a twist where “the damsel in distress saves herself.”

The cast included a talented ensemble, starring Emily Bader, Edward Bluemel, Jordan Peters, Anna Chancellor, Dominic Cooper, Kate O’Flynn, Rob Brydon, Abbie Hern, Isabella Brownson, Robyn Betteridge, Henry Ashton, Mairéad Tyers, Michael Workeye, Joe Klocek, Brandon Grace, and Will Keen. Burgess served as the series’ creator and co-showrunner, along with Meredith Glynn, who was also an executive producer.

Despite being released with minimal promotion, all eight episodes of My Lady Jane‘s first season managed to garner significant praise from critics, achieving a 94% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 82% audience score. TVLine even named it one of the most underrated shows of 2024. However, the series struggled to make it onto Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming charts, which likely contributed to its cancellation.

Fans of the show have quickly rallied to save it, with a Change.org petition titled “SAVE ‘My Lady Jane'” amassing nearly 7,000 signatures. As of now, it remains uncertain whether the show will be picked up by another network or streaming service.

My Lady Jane is just the latest in a series of cancellations on Prime Video this year. It follows the July cancellation of American Rust, a crime drama led by Jeff Daniels, which concluded after two seasons. Additionally, the western/sci-fi series Outer Range starring Josh Brolin and Imogen Poots was also recently canceled.
