Nobles Revel Amid Black Death in ‘The Decameron’

July 10 (UPI) — Netflix has unveiled a sneak peek of its upcoming series, The Decameron.

The streaming platform shared a trailer for the show on Wednesday, featuring a star-studded cast including Zosia Mamet from Girls, Tony Hale known for Veep, and Tanya Reynolds from Sex Education.

Based on the 14th-century short story collection by Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio, the Netflix adaptation of The Decameron is presented as a soapy dark comedy. Set in 1348 during the devastating bubonic plague, also known as the Black Death, the story navigates through the lives of Italian nobles and their servants as they strive to survive the pandemic.

The trailer illustrates the nobles’ refuge in a villa situated outside Florence. Within these walls, they indulge in eating, drinking, and romantic escapades while the deadly pandemic rages outside.

The series also showcases a diverse cast featuring Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Amar Chadha-Patel, Leila Farzad, Lou Gala, Karan Gill, Douggie McMeekin, and Jessica Plummer.

Previously, Netflix had shared a teaser and several first-look photos providing a glimpse into what viewers can expect from the series.

The Decameron is created and helmed by showrunner Kathleen Jordan. The series is set to premiere on July 25.
