Northwestern Names Mike Wright as Starting QB Against Miami (Ohio)

Northwestern University is set to have Mike Wright as their starting quarterback in the upcoming game against Miami (Ohio). This marks the third major conference program where Wright has taken on a starting role.

Wright’s football career has seen him at Mississippi State in 2023 and Vanderbilt from 2020 to 2022 before landing at Northwestern. During training camp, he found himself in a tight battle with redshirt sophomore Jack Lausch for the starting position. Ultimately, Wright’s experience and adaptability caught the attention of the Northwestern coaching staff.

With a new offensive coordinator, Zach Lujan, brought in by head coach David Braun, Northwestern’s offense is expected to take on a fresh approach this season. The coaching team values Wright’s background and his proficiency in both passing and rushing, which played a significant role in the decision to name him as the starter.

Throughout his career, Wright has started a total of 14 games and participated in 39 games overall. Last year, he made three starts at Mississippi State, and during his tenure at Vanderbilt, he started 11 games. This extensive experience gives him a solid foundation as he steps into the role at Northwestern.

Wright’s career statistics reflect his dual-threat capability. He has thrown for 2,520 yards and achieved 24 touchdown passes. Additionally, he has rushed for 1,229 yards and scored 10 rushing touchdowns.

While transitioning from quarterback Ben Bryant, who had a productive final season in 2023 leading the team to an 8-5 record and a victory over Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl, Northwestern aims to build on that success. Braun secured his position as the full-time head coach after serving as interim during the previous season.

Defensively, Northwestern returns an impressive 76% of its defensive production, which is the highest percentage in college football this year. The Wildcats’ defense ranked No. 35 in total defense but struggled offensively, finishing ranked No. 121 in that category.

In their upcoming matchup, Northwestern will go up against a Miami (Ohio) team that is coming off a successful season in which they captured the MAC title in 2023. This game will be a crucial test for Wright as he seeks to establish himself as a key player in Northwestern’s new offensive scheme while facing a determined opponent.
