Olivia Munn Skips Making John Mulaney’s Birthday Cake After Last Year’s Fail

Olivia Munn admitted she didn’t bake her husband John Mulaney’s birthday cake as she usually does. On Monday, the 44-year-old Magic Mike star, who recently confirmed her secret nuptials to the comedian, shared a photo on her Instagram Stories revealing the store-bought cakes she purchased for his forty-second birthday.

One chocolate iced cake read ‘Happy Birthday’ and the other, a vanilla iced dessert, read ‘John John!’ Both cakes were adorned with four red candles. The Oklahoma native wrote above the post, “I didn’t have the energy to make a (bad) birthday cake this year so I went to the grocery store.”

Although she didn’t bake this year’s cakes from scratch, Olivia had a very good reason. Last year, her carefully crafted cake for John ended up being destroyed by their son, Malcolm Hiệp, who’s now two. She shared a throwback snap of the messy confection she had spent hours preparing, writing, “Last year’s,” with Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” playing in the background.

The three-tier dessert was decorated with vanilla icing, a pile of rainbow sprinkles, and candles that read ‘Happy Birthday.’ Olivia shared a clip of the cake fail at that time, saying, “I tried to make a four-layered birthday cake and the bottom layer is coming out.” She humorously added, “Like and subscribe for more baking tips,” and later wrote on another snap, “The cake was delicious. And ugly. Success!”

Olivia and John welcomed their son, Malcolm, on Christmas Eve in December 2021, having gone public with their relationship earlier that spring. John’s birthday celebration came just weeks after he and Olivia secretly tied the knot over the July Fourth weekend. According to People, the intimate New York ceremony at a friend’s home had only the couple’s two-year-old son and a witness present.

Fans had speculated they were engaged in late June when John briefly shared a photo of himself wearing a wedding band before quickly removing the post.

Olivia revealed in the past that she had her eggs frozen for future IVF procedures before undergoing a hysterectomy. She discovered chemotherapy and radiation could affect fertility. “After my diagnosis, we decided to try one more round of egg retrievals and hoped it was a good month,” she told Vogue in May. Olivia also revealed she had tried the procedure three times—at ages 33, 39, and most recently, 42.
