Olympic Legends Appear on NBC

Bob Costas and Al Michaels made their much-anticipated appearance at the Paris Olympics, joining NBC host Mike Tirico on set Sunday afternoon.

The two legends reminisced about memorable moments and athletes from past U.S. Olympics while also looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The trio shared a comfortable camaraderie, making the broadcast a nostalgic treat for viewers.

At one point, Tirico added some fun to the segment by inviting Costas to send the broadcast to a commercial break. “Hey, I know you’ve hosted a few of these — can you still throw it to a break?” Tirico asked. Costas responded, “I’ll try. Are we ad-libbing the break? Do we know what comes up next?” Tirico simply replied, “More.” Michaels jumped in, “Is it a local break?” To which Costas responded, “More to come, from Paris.” Costas then jokingly asked, “And the games of — what Olympiad is this?”

Both Costas and Michaels are household names when it comes to the Olympics. Costas served as the host of NBC’s Olympic coverage from 1988 to 2016. Michaels has taken on various Olympic roles over the years, including co-hosting the closing ceremonies with Costas. However, he will always be remembered for his iconic call, “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” during Team USA’s “Miracle on Ice” gold medal hockey run in 1980.

Having Costas, Michaels, and Tirico together in the same room felt like an iconic scene from the MCU with all superheroes assembled. As Bonnie Bernstein accurately described, “If this ain’t the ultimate Olympics hype machine… not sure what is.”

Front Office Sports had reported on July 31 that the pair would make appearances during the Olympics. However, until Sunday, they had not been on TV, despite being spotted with Snoop Dogg earlier in the games.

Viewers were thrilled to see Costas and Michaels back covering the Olympics, even if it was only for a brief moment.
