Olympics Fans Awed by Aussie Break Dancer ‘Raygun’ at Closing Ceremony

Australian break dancer Rachael “Raygun” Gunn made headlines during the Olympic closing ceremony after her performance became a viral sensation. Breaking, a form of breakdancing, debuted at Paris 2024, creating buzz when the 36-year-old B-Girl Raygun showcased her moves.

Unfortunately, Raygun didn’t earn any points from the judges and was eliminated after losing all three bouts in the round-robin competition. Yet, one of her moves, where she rolled around on the floor, captivated online audiences and amassed millions of views on social media.

Following the online backlash to her performance, Raygun’s Olympic teammates rallied to support her during the closing ceremony on Sunday, 11 August. As a gesture of solidarity, rower Angus Widdicombe carried her on his shoulders while parading through the streets where the Australian team had gathered. During this parade, Raygun playfully mimicked her now-famous “kangaroo” dance move.

Several videos surfaced showing Raygun dancing on a makeshift dance floor, drawing cheers and applause from her fellow teammates. One clip, shared with the caption “Put it in the Louvre,” particularly stood out, with many feeling that her spontaneous performance was even better than her Olympic routine.

Despite—or perhaps because of—the mixed reactions to her performance, Raygun quickly became a cult favorite among viewers. Her newfound notoriety even caught the attention of singer Adele, who paused her Munich concert to discuss Raygun’s performance.

“It’s all me and my friends have been talking about,” Adele said to the crowd. “And I am not saying anything, but I think it’s the best thing that has happened at the Olympics for the entire time.”

She added, “I can’t work out if it was a joke, but either way, it has made me very, very happy, and me and my friends have been laughing ourselves silly for nearly 24 hours.”
