‘One Tree Hill’: Wilmington-shot TV Drama May Get a Netflix Reboot

Netflix is in the process of developing a sequel to the well-loved drama “One Tree Hill,” famously shot in Wilmington. The entertainment industry publication, Variety, broke this news.

According to the information, original series stars Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Daneel Ackles are stepping in as executive producers for the reboot. Additionally, Bush and Burton are set to reprise their roles. Ackles is reportedly in discussions to return as well.

Variety mentioned that Warner Bros. Television, the original producer of “One Tree Hill,” will also produce the reboot.

“One Tree Hill” aired on The CW network from 2003 to 2012, with all nine seasons being filmed in Wilmington. The show’s fanbase is still active, with many visiting key Wilmington locations. Spots like the Wilmington Riverwalk’s “Naley Bench” and the Harry Forden Sixth Street Bridge, now often called the One Tree Hill Bridge, remain popular with fans. The actors from the show have frequently returned to Wilmington for fan conventions.

Over the years, the possibility of a reboot has been a topic of interest among the cast. In May, Chad Michael Murray expressed on The Today Show that a reboot is “needed.” He echoed similar thoughts in a 2022 interview with People magazine, suggesting that the show could address many current societal issues.

In January, Sophia Bush, alongside her “One Tree Hill” co-stars Burton and Bethany Joy Lenz, discussed the topic on their podcast “Drama Queens.” They talked about experiencing sexual harassment behind the scenes and pondered what a feminist reclamation of the show might look like.

It appears that the question may be answered sooner rather than later. However, whether the rebooted “One Tree Hill” will be shot again in Wilmington remains uncertain. For many fans, the idea of setting the show anywhere else seems unimaginable.
