Come Tuesday, Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” will once again grace screens for its fourth season. The show features amateur sleuths and mystery podcast cohosts, Mabel Mora (played by Selena Gomez), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), who aim to crack the latest in a string of murders at their residential building in New York’s Upper East Side.
Ahead of the cozy sitcom’s new season, here WWD imagines six of its main characters as fragrances.
On a literal level, Mabel Mora and By the Fireplace share their spicy exteriors but warm hearts. Mabel’s deadpan humor reflects the scent’s clove and pink peppercorn top notes, while her fierce loyalty to her partners-in-fighting-crime parallels the cashmeran and vanilla accord base. But By the Fireplace is, above all else, about its cozy vibe—similar to Mora’s easygoing yet uncertain lifestyle.
Retired TV detective Charles-Haden Savage is a universally likable character, much like Calvin Klein’s woody-fresh CK One. This unisex scent gained immense popularity after its 1994 launch, paving the way for genderless fragrances. Much like Charles, who loves the classics, CK One remains timeless.
No-nonsense detective Donna Williams perfectly matches Juliette Has a Gun’s Not a Perfume. Launched in 2010, the cult-classic single-note scent puts cetalox—an ambergris-like synthetic molecule—at the forefront. Donna’s pragmatic approach to her work is mirrored in Not a Perfume’s straightforward composition.
Francis Kurkdjian’s Grand Soir pairs well with Broadway director Oliver Putnam, whose larger-than-life personality aligns with the bright lights-inspired fragrance. The amber-cinnamon composition embodies Putnam’s commitment to dramatic flair, making it a perfect match for this quadruple-threat character.
Sazz Pataki, the smooth-talking stunt double and girlfriend snatcher, is perfectly matched with Dior Sauvage. Launched in 2015, this ambroxan-infused fragrance has garnered a reputation among its young devotees. Pataki would naturally opt for a scent as bold and noticeable as herself.
If Loretta Durkin hadn’t finally gotten her Broadway break in the third season, she might have become a clean fragrance influencer on #PerfumeTok. Abbott’s Sequoia, with notes of cedarwood, sandalwood, and smoky incense, evokes the spirit of Putnam’s paisley print-loving romantic interest, played by Meryl Streep. Like all Abbott’s fragrances, Durkin’s flair for show biz was made in New York.
