Pair Arrested for Stealing Burial Markers from Veterans’ Headstones

Authorities in Indiana have arrested two individuals in connection with the theft of bronze veteran markers from cemeteries across the state. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation on August 28 after receiving multiple reports about the thefts, particularly around the Union Mills and Rolling Prairie Cemeteries, as well as locations in Carmel, Pinola, Greenwood, and St. Stan’s Cemeteries.

Detectives discovered that at least 15 bronze veteran markers had been reported stolen, with one additional marker found to be damaged. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office appealed to the public for information, urging residents to check the gravesites of deceased veterans. Within a day of this appeal, investigators received credible information that helped identify a suspect.

Following the tips, Detective Jake Koch and Detective Aaron Banic successfully apprehended 53-year-old Terry Wood and 25-year-old Breanna Puentez. Law enforcement personnel, operating under an effort termed “Justice, Peace and Salute,” executed a search at a residence on Andrew Avenue in La Porte. During this operation, authorities took Wood into custody and recovered additional evidence related to the case. Puentez was later arrested and charged for her involvement in the thefts.

Both suspects have been charged with one count of felony theft and 15 counts of cemetery mischief. They are currently held in custody, with Wood’s bond set at $15,005 in cash only. Authorities noted that Puentez is not eligible for bond at this time.

Captain Derek J. Allen from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office condemned the actions of the suspects, labeling the behavior as “disgusting” and “unacceptable.” He expressed hope that the thorough investigation would lead to justice for both the accused and the veterans affected by these crimes. Captain Allen emphasized that these actions undermine the respect owed to those who served in the military, whether living or deceased.

As of now, the investigation is ongoing, and no court date has been confirmed for Wood or Puentez. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, aiming to recover any additional stolen property and to ensure that such disrespectful acts do not continue.
