Paramore’s Hayley Williams Defends U2 After Casual Diss

Hayley Williams of Paramore is a big fan of U2 and particularly loves their concert at Red Rocks. Recently, she felt the need to defend the iconic Irish rock band, comprising Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr., on social media.

Williams shared a screenshot from a Paramore fan page on X (formerly Twitter) via her Instagram Story. The fan account had highlighted that Paramore has now surpassed U2 as the twentieth most-streamed rock act of all time. Williams responded to what she perceived as a slight against U2.

“Not the casual U2 diss lmao?!!” Williams wrote in her story. “Their Live at Red Rocks film still gives me such a buzz. Just a tight ass band with huge vocals.”

If the original post has expired, users can still find a screenshot of it shared on X by @rockmycoffee, who seems thrilled by Williams’ comments.

The U2 Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky concert film, which Williams referenced, remains one of U2’s most celebrated performances. Originally released as a video cassette to accompany their 1983 live album, Under a Blood Red Sky, the concert takes its name from their hit “New Year’s Day” off the War album.

Held at the majestic Red Rocks Amphitheater on June 5, 1983, the performance is especially noted for the inclement weather that didn’t hinder U2. Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. delivered a memorable show in the rain, solidifying their legendary status.

Hayley Williams has been Paramore’s lead vocalist since co-founding the band in 2004. She is the only constant member, performing currently with Zac Farro and Taylor York. Past members have included Josh Farro, Jeremy Davis, Jason Bynum, John Hembree, and Hunter Lamb.

To date, Paramore has won two Grammy Awards out of five nominations. During the 2024 ceremony, the band won Best Rock Album for This Is Why and Best Alternative Music Performance for the title track.

Paramore has embarked on five headlining tours and two co-headlining tours. They also opened for Taylor Swift on several dates of her Eras Tour. Beginning with the inaugural show on March 17, 2023, they rejoined Swift for the European leg of the tour, opening all 20 shows.

Paramore will continue to support Swift on her European leg, concluding with five shows at Wembley Stadium in London. Other artists, including Suki Waterhouse and Maisie Peters, will also join for those final shows.

U2 remains an iconic band, thanks in large part to formative performances like Red Rocks and Live Aid that catapulted them to fame. Known for their dynamic live acts, their tours, such as ZooTV, PopMart, and the 360 Tour, have been groundbreaking.

More recently, U2 has continued to innovate in live performance technology during their Innocence + Experience Tour, the 2017 and 2019 legs of the Joshua Tree Tour, and the Experience + Innocence Tour.

In 2023, U2 took the stage to open the Sphere in Las Vegas, a high-tech venue with a 16K resolution LED screen wrapping around the interior. U2’s 40-night residency was followed by Phish and Dead and Company, the latter still performing their 30-night residency.

The Eagles are set to take over the venue from September 20, 2024, to January 25, 2025, with a total of 20 shows. Additionally, EDM artist Anyma will perform the venue’s first EDM shows from December 27, 2024, to January 1, 2025.
