It has been 13 years since Paul Feig directed the instant classic film Bridesmaids, a movie that significantly changed the perception of women in comedy. During its theatrical release, the film grossed over $300 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing Judd Apatow production to date. The movie also served as a launchpad for the comedic careers of Rose Byrne, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Ellie Kemper, who remain prominent figures in the genre to this day.

In Bridesmaids, Annie (Wiig) is a single woman struggling to make ends meet after the recession. Her best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), announces her engagement, pushing Annie to interact with the rest of the bridal party and help organize the wedding of Lillian’s dreams. The film showcases the many crazy rituals associated with planning a wedding, something that resonates with many women who have gone through the process.

With the current trend of sequels, threequels, and reboots gracing the film industry, the question of a possible Bridesmaids sequel remains. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con while promoting his latest project Jackpot!, Feig finally addressed the lingering question about a potential sequel.

“No, no, I’m not touching that one,” Feig joked. “No, I don’t know. You know, who knows? If somebody had a great idea — it’s just sequels are hard. That whole movie is great because her life was a mess and the whole thing was so much fun to watch her kind of go through this and repair her life. So, if you make a sequel, well, her life can’t be a mess again. So, I mean, it can’t be wedding, it can be, but … people’s lives never go downhill! What are you talking about!?”

Several original cast members, including McCarthy and Byrne, have previously expressed willingness to return. While McCarthy seemed enthusiastic about jumping on board a sequel, Byrne took a more measured approach, stating that she would only consider it if the rest of the original cast joined in. They all have kept themselves busy with new projects; Wiig is involved in Despicable Me 4 and Big Mouth, McCarthy portrayed Ursula in The Little Mermaid, and Byrne appeared in Insidious: The Red Door and a few episodes of Bluey. Kemper, although not as active, recently starred in Netflix’s Happiness for Beginners.
