Peacock Elevates Its Service with Two New Exciting Updates

Of all the major streaming services, one that’s too often unfairly overlooked is NBC’s Peacock. In the second quarter of this year, the service had around 33 million paid subscribers, which pales in comparison to Netflix’s more than 277 million. However, for some, subscription numbers don’t really dictate the quality of content. If a streaming service produces good shows, it deserves attention irrespective of its subscriber count.

Increasingly, Peacock has become a go-to choice during free time. Its hybrid live TV feature, combined with original titles like Poker Face and Ted, is appealing. Notably, Peacock continues to launch intriguing projects featuring prominent talents.

Two upcoming Peacock series exemplify this strategy. Although neither has a confirmed release date, both projects highlight Peacock’s commitment to unique, high-quality content.

The first title, Ponies, is an espionage thriller with an impressive cast and crew. The show is set in Moscow during the Cold War, featuring Emilia Clarke as Bea, a Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants. Bea works anonymously as a secretary in the American embassy. She and her colleague, Twila, become widows when their husbands die under mysterious circumstances in the USSR. The two subsequently turn into CIA operatives, determined to uncover the conspiracy behind their husbands’ deaths.

Directed by Emmy Award-nominated Susanna Fogel (The Flight Attendant, The Spy Who Dumped Me) and co-written with David Iserson (Mr. Robot), who also serves as the showrunner, Ponies promises an exciting spy drama.

Another intriguing project, M.I.A., is a female-led crime thriller set in South Florida. Created by one of the co-creators of Netflix’s Ozark, the show is directed by Stefano Sollima, known for ZeroZeroZero and Gomorrah.

The show revolves around Etta Tiger Jonze, who turns to drug running as a family affair. After witnessing her family’s slaughter, Etta seeks justice, transforming herself from a powerless orphan into South Florida’s most powerful criminal Queenpin.

These new offerings, along with other titles like The Killer and the upcoming The Day of the Jackal, showcase Peacock’s determination to deliver compelling content despite being smaller than some competitors.
