Peter Marshall, born Ralph Pierre LaCock on March 30, 1926, in Huntington, West Virginia. He transitioned from serving in the artillery in Italy during World War II to becoming a disc jockey. Returning to the States, he partnered with Tommy Noonan in nightclubs and variety shows.

Marshall appeared on television sporadically until his friend Morey Amsterdam recommended him as the replacement host for The Hollywood Squares, which was initially hosted by Bert Parks. Although initially hesitant to host the show, Marshall accepted the job to prevent comedian Dan Rowan from getting it.

The reluctance stemmed from a past incident when Marshall and Noonan tried to collaborate with Rowan, who had disrespected Noonan during his terminal illness. Conversely, Dick Martin, Rowan’s partner, was supportive during Noonan’s illness. The job Marshall took on reluctantly turned into a 15-year tenure and over 5,000 episodes.

Marshall wore many hats: radio personality, singer, and actor. He was also an animal lover, participating in the 50th anniversary of Betty White’s Pet Set, a show dedicated to educating and endearing audiences to animals.

In a 2019 interview for the Television Academy Foundation, he reflected on his tenure with The Hollywood Squares, advising prospective hosts to, “Listen to people, have fun, and know the game. That’s basically all you have to do to be a good game show host.” He added, “Know the game thoroughly so if something goes wrong, you know how to rectify it. And most importantly, enjoy the people.”

Peter Marshall is survived by his wife of 35 years, Laurie, daughters Suzanne and Jamie, son Pete, 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son David.

Rest in peace, Peter Marshall.
