‘Pilot’ Soars to Second Weekend Win

Lotte Entertainment’s comedy “Pilot” soared to the top of the South Korean box office for the second consecutive weekend, amassing a $5.03 million collection and capturing nearly half of the nation’s total box office earnings.

According to data from Kobis, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council (Kofic), the film secured a 46% share of the market over the Friday-Sunday period. Since its release 12 days ago, the movie has achieved a cumulative total of $20.3 million, garnered from just over three million admissions.

The Korean-produced children’s animation film “Heartspring: Teenieping of Love” claimed the second spot in its opening weekend, bringing in $1.74 million. Over a five-day release period, the film has earned a total of $2.68 million.

Third place went to “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which earned $842,000, driven by premium large format screenings. Over three weekends in Korea, the film has accumulated $14.2 million. This positions it as the eighth-highest grossing title this year in Korea and the fourth highest among imported films.

“Despicable Me 4” saw a drop of $1 million week-on-week, slipping from third to fourth place. It earned $777,000 this weekend, bringing its cumulative earnings to $9.27 million since its release on July 24.

Newly-released Korean crime film “Revolver” debuted in fifth place, earning $749,000. Its five-day total amounts to $1.33 million.

“Inside Out 2” added $442,000 to its earnings, bringing its cumulative total to $60.9 million since its release on June 12. This solidifies its position as the top imported title so far this year.

Korean film “Escape” earned $185,000 this weekend, bringing its total earnings to $17.6 million after a month since its release.

Japanese animation films recaptured audience interest, taking the next two spots. Newly released “Bocci! The Rock! Movie Part 1” earned $171,000 over its opening weekend, building a five-day cumulative of $353,000. “Detective Conan the Movie: The Million Dollar Pentagram” earned $140,000, bringing its total earnings to $4.97 million since its mid-July release.

The tenth spot was occupied by preview screenings of the upcoming film “Twisters,” which earned $124,000 ahead of its Wednesday release.

Overall, the weekend box office reached $10.9 million, considered weak for the summer season. Traditionally, this period sees a boost from Korean audiences seeking both the cool of air-conditioned theaters and the chills from horror films.
