Pixar’s Top 10 Grossing Films: Inside Out 2 Leads the Chart

As of Wednesday, Inside Out 2 has become the highest-grossing Pixar movie of all time. Ever since its debut in June, the sequel has dominated the box office, surpassing Kung Fu Panda 4, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Dune: Part Two to become the biggest movie of 2024. There’s even a real possibility it could overtake Frozen 2 as the highest-grossing animated movie ever, needing just another $200 million in ticket sales.

With this in mind, now seems like the perfect time to take a look at Pixar’s updated list of its 10 highest-grossing movies. It was quite surprising to see that Incredibles 2 previously held the top spot. Despite being widely regarded as a step down from the original, its success highlights just how profitable Pixar sequels can be.

1. Inside Out 2 – $1.251 billion (and counting)
2. Incredibles 2 – $1.242 billion
3. Toy Story 4 – $1.073 billion
4. Toy Story 3 – $1.066 billion
5. Finding Dory – $1.028 billion
6. Finding Nemo – $871 million
7. Inside Out – $857 million
8. Coco – $814 million
9. Monsters University – $743 million
10. Up – $735 million

Looking at these numbers, it’s puzzling why Disney didn’t hold on to the movies Pixar released during the pandemic instead of placing them on Disney+. While Turning Red or Soul might not have hit the $1 billion mark, it’s evident that there’s a strong appetite for thoughtful, emotional animated films that resonate with both parents and adults. However, Pixar sequels dominate the list, with the entire top 5 consisting solely of sequels.

Despite the record-breaking box office success of Inside Out 2, there’s some concern about the future direction of Pixar. Disney expects Pixar movies to generate significant revenue, and for more than a decade, it’s been the sequels that have delivered the big bucks. Pixar’s next movie, Elio, is an entirely original story slated for release in 2025. There is hope that it will make a strong impact upon its arrival.

If Elio turns out to be more like Lightyear, which reportedly lost the studio over $100 million, it could lead to a future dominated by Toy Story sequels and other spin-offs.
