Please Don’t Judge Me by My Past
Simone Biles’ biological mother, Shanon Biles, hopes to make amends with her historic, Olympian gold medalist of a daughter one day.
In a recent interview with Daily Mail, Shanon — who birthed Simone, 27, Adria Biles, 22, Ashley Biles-Thomas, 34, and Tevin Biles-Thomas, 29 — opened up about her past drug and alcohol addiction and what it meant to her to have to give her children away.
Simone and Adria were taken in by foster care before her father, Ronald Biles, and his wife, Nellie, took over guardianship. As for Ashley and Tevin, they were taken in by Ronald’s sister.
“It took me six years before I saw my children again,” Shanon revealed. “I was respecting my dad to let the kids transition. He felt that was the best thing for them. It was hard to give up my kids, but I had to do what I had to do. I wasn’t able to care for them. I was still using, and he didn’t want me coming in and out of their lives when I wasn’t right.”
However, according to the 52-year-old, she’s been “in trouble” since 2022 and now works as a discount grocery store cashier.
“I am a recovering addict and will always be an addict. But there’s a way [to recovery],” she shared. “You have to learn to stay away from people, places and things. Change your routine and live your life. Live your best life.” Shanon also described herself as a “loving person” who would “give you the shirt off [her] back.” She also asserted that she is “not the person [she] used to be.”
When speaking of reconnecting with Simone, she admitted that she has her daughter’s “direct number,” but she “won’t use it.”
“I want her to reach out to me. She’s 27 now. She’s married,” she declared. “I would have liked to have been a part of that, but I just have to wait for her. You can’t push anybody. It hasn’t happened yet, but I have patience. I’m waiting on her.” As far as her relationship with her father Ronald, Shanon claims that they speak “all the time.”
“What I hear about Simone, I hear through my dad,” said the proud mom, also sharing that she did watch her daughter become the most decorated gymnast in history at the 2024 Paris Olympics on TV.
“I would like to make amends with Simone personally. I would just ask her to forgive me,” she expressed. “‘Can we move forward? Don’t judge me on my past. Let’s move forward… Let’s sit down.’”
Speaking directly to Simone, Shanon added, “I would like to sit down and talk to you and answer any questions you may have. I don’t know what you’ve been told, but I want you to hear the real deal.”
