Police Officer’s Soulful Cover of “Thinking Out Loud” Moves “AGT” Audience to Tears

Virginia police officer Mervin Mayo captured the hearts of the “AGT” audience with his heartfelt rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” dedicated to his wife. He took center stage during the July 16 audition episode and impressed both the crowd and judges Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, Simon Cowell, and Sofía Vergara. His touching backstory brought an additional layer of depth to his performance, showcasing his longstanding commitment to helping at-risk youth. Mervin explained that his dedication stems from his own experiences growing up as an at-risk youth.

“I grew up in a housing project in Richmond, Virginia,” he shared. “There was a program called the Police Athletic League. An officer named Curtis Simmons took me under his wing because I was a little mischievous growing up, and he kept me safe.”

Mervin reflected on the impact Officer Simmons had on his life. “I’m alive today because he kept me out of trouble,” he continued. “I thank him for that because I’ve seen more murders as a child than I have as a police officer.”

Despite his passion for service, Mervin also harbored a love for singing, though he had never pursued it beyond karaoke. His wife, Mechelle, encouraged him to chase his dreams and audition for “AGT.” “My wife is the reason that I’m here today,” he said. “She tells me to follow my dream. And music is in me, yeah, it’s in me.”

Seated at a piano, the officer poured his emotions into the classic love song. His voice resonated deeply, leading to couples embracing and the crowd erupting in cheers. Throughout his performance, he glanced at his wife, Mechelle, who stood backstage with her hand over her heart, visibly moved. As he sang, happy tears were seen streaming down the faces of Mechelle, Heidi, and other audience members.

Upon finishing his moving performance, Mervin brought his wife on stage to share a heartfelt moment with the audience. It was no surprise when he advanced with four enthusiastic votes from the judges.
