Poster for Apartment 7A Channels Rosemary’s Baby Spirit

One of the most anticipated horror releases of the fall is “Apartment 7A” on Paramount+. This upcoming film serves as a prequel to “Rosemary’s Baby”, although the title itself doesn’t immediately evoke a direct connection to the iconic horror story. The first poster for “Apartment 7A”, however, clearly channels the distinctive style of the 1968 movie starring Mia Farrow. By doing this, it signals to audiences that this new film intends to challenge expectations while maintaining a familiar aesthetic. The movie is set to debut on Paramount+ on September 27th.

“Apartment 7A” takes place in 1965 New York City and serves as a backstory to the events that occur in the classic horror film “Rosemary’s Baby”. The movie’s logline reveals that it will explore what happened in the infamous apartment before Rosemary moved in. The story revolves around a struggling young dancer who suffers a devastating injury and finds herself drawn in by dark forces. An older, well-connected couple promises her a chance at fame, leading her into a world filled with ominous possibilities.

The cast of “Apartment 7A” features notable actors including Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Dianne Wiest (“Mayor of Kingstown”), Jim Sturgess (“Across the Universe”), Kevin McNally (“Pirates of the Caribbean” series), Marli Siu (“Everything I Know About Love”), Andrew Buchan (“All the Money in the World”), Rosy McEwen (“Blue Jean”), and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (“Wonka”). Directed by Natalie Erika James, who previously brought audiences the film “Relic”, “Apartment 7A” promises to deliver a fresh take on a well-loved horror narrative.

“When I was first approached about the project, I was very dubious,” director Natalie Erika James previously shared with Vanity Fair. “I never would have signed on to do a remake of such a classic and seminal film. But it’s been a joy to play within the world and sandbox of Ira Levin’s novel and to play with the characters. My motivation for taking it on was feeling like there was a different emotional journey to explore and to do it in a way that skewed the genre a little bit.”

James elaborated on the distinctions between the new film and the original. “A key difference between Rosemary and [Garner’s] Terry is that Rosemary starts as almost a hapless victim to the choices that her husband has made, and then it’s her journey of uncovering the conspiracy around her and the horror of that… For Terry, I think she almost embodies both Rosemary and Guy. Terry is both the vessel, and also an active part of the Faustian exchange. There’s still a wider conspiracy around her, and she’s being made to feel complicit in her own assault, which in a sense is even more horrifying.”

The release of “Apartment 7A” is generating significant buzz, especially among fans of “Rosemary’s Baby”. As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build for this exciting prequel that promises to dive deeper into the dark, mysterious world that captivated audiences decades ago.

“Apartment 7A” premieres on Paramount+ on September 27th.
