Prime Video Cancels Series “My Lady Jane”

My Lady Jane has been dethroned permanently.

Prime Video has decided to cancel the comedic fantasy drama series that reimagined the short reign of Lady Jane Grey, a historical figure who was Queen of England for just nine days. As reported by Deadline, although the show debuted on June 27 and received positive feedback, it didn’t manage to secure a spot on Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming charts.

Described as one of TVLine’s most underrated shows of 2024, My Lady Jane featured Emily Bader (Charmed) as Lady Jane Grey. The official synopsis depicted her as a young Tudor noblewoman who saves herself in a world mixing action, history, fantasy, comedy, and romance. This unique take sees history told in an alternative way where the damsel in distress becomes the hero of her own story.

The series added a distinctive twist by introducing characters known as Ethians who can transform into animals. In the storyline, after being coerced into an arranged marriage, Jane discovers that her new husband, Lord Guildford Dudley (played by Edward Bluemel from Killing Eve), is the same man she previously had a flirtatious yet disdainful encounter with in a bar. Further complicating matters, Guildford involuntarily shifts into a horse during the daytime.

The season finale saw the lovers reuniting. Jane, riding on her husband in horse form, hinted at ongoing political strife within the English Court. Princess Mary (Kate O’Flynn) had succeeded in seizing the throne from Jane and nearly had her executed.

The series assembled an ensemble cast, including Jordan Peters as King Edward VI, Jane’s cousin; Anna Chancellor as Lady Frances Grey, Jane’s mother; and Dominic Cooper as Lord Seymour, an ally and lover of Mary. Other notable cast members were Rob Brydon as Lord Dudley, Guildford’s father; Abbie Hern as Princess Bess; Isabella Brownson and Robyn Betteridge as Jane’s sisters, Katherine and Margaret; Henry Ashton as Lord Stan Dudley, Guildford’s brother; and Máiréad Tyers as Susannah, Jane’s Ethian friend. Additional roles included Michael Workeye as Ethian leader Archer, Joe Klocek as Ethian thief Fitz, Brandon Grace as William Seymour, and Will Keen as the Duke of Norfolk. Jim Broadbent made a guest appearance as the Duke of Leicester.

Meredith Glynn (The Boys, Supernatural) and the series creator Gemma Burgess served as the showrunners.
