Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Upset British Tabloids on Colombia Tour

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have once again captured attention with their latest tour, this time visiting Nigeria in May on behalf of the Invictus Games. Following their successful visit, Colombia also extended an invitation to the couple. However, their decision to limit media access during these tours has irked the British press.

The Telegraph expressed frustration over being sidelined, noting that unlike traditional royal tours, the media was not invited. Instead, one handpicked reporter from the US publication Harper’s Bazaar was chosen to relay each event to various news outlets worldwide. This approach by Harry and Meghan emphasizes their control over the narrative, distinct from their previous roles as senior royals.

Critics like The Telegraph overlook that Harry and Meghan, now private citizens, have the freedom to manage media access. This control helps them avoid potential negative headlines and harassment. While curated snapshots can show only a part of the story, video coverage usually paints the full picture.

Meghan’s ability to speak Spanish during their engagements in Colombia made a remarkable impression. “For Meghan to say ‘my friend’ in that way is such a powerful statement and shows just how close they have become. People will take note of that,” a Colombian journalist shared with the Daily Mail. These personal touches contribute to the couple’s popularity and their ability to connect with people on their tours promoting the Invictus Games, an event eagerly anticipated by many countries.

The royal family might not appreciate Harry and Meghan’s independent tours, but these trips highlight what the palace is missing, especially with Kate Middleton currently out of the limelight due to health issues. Tina Brown, author of The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor–the Truth and the Turmoil, remarked on the couple’s potential after their visit to Nigeria. Brown told the BBC, “When I saw him and Meghan in Nigeria, I had a nostalgia. I felt this is what it could have been. These two, who are enormously appealing to the public and who are very good at it, were out there in Nigeria sort of looking really attractive and being appealing people.”

Harry and Meghan’s tours seem to have left a noticeable gap in charisma at the palace, emphasizing the unique charm they brought to their royal duties.
