Prince Harry Shares How Fatherhood Inspired His Landmine Eradication Work

Prince Harry recently spoke about his experiences as a father while participating in advocacy work in Angola for The HALO Trust, an organization focused on removing landmines and supporting recovery in war-torn areas. His remarks were made during an event held in New York City on September 23.

Reflecting on his first visit to Angola in 2019, Harry shared, “Much has changed in my life and the world since then.” He emphasized the personal growth he’s experienced, having welcomed his second child during that period. Harry is the father of son Archie, who is five, and daughter Lilibet, who is three, with his wife, Meghan Markle.

Harry noted, “While you don’t need children to have a stake in the future of our planet, I do know that my mother would have been horrified that anyone’s children or grandchildren would live in a world still infested with mines.” His comments reflect a deep personal connection to the cause and underscore the importance of ensuring a safe and secure environment for future generations.

Through his work with The HALO Trust, Harry aims to honor the legacy of his mother, Princess Diana. In 1997, Diana notably visited Angola and walked through a minefield to raise awareness about the dangers posed by landmines. Harry replicated that experience in 2019 and remarked on the transformation of the area, describing it as having evolved into a “bustling vibrant town.” He pointed out “The Diana Tree,” the location where his mother was famously photographed during her visit.

Harry expressed his commitment to carrying on his mother’s mission, stating, “As you know, The HALO Trust work in Angola meant a great deal to my mother, and carrying on her legacy is a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously.” He conveyed the urgency of the mission, stating, “I think we all know how much she’d want us to finish this particular job. We’re all here because we’re a band of True Believers fighting for a mine-free world.”

The HALO Trust’s mission is to help communities that have been devastated by conflict recover and thrive. As per the organization’s mission statement, when conflicts cease, the land often remains dangerous, strewn with landmines and unexploded ordnance. Families in these regions live in constant fear, unable to safely plant crops or move around. True peace, the organization notes, cannot be achieved until the land is cleared of these dangers.

During the event, Harry appeared visibly moved while listening to The HALO Trust’s CEO James Cowan, who spoke warmly about Princess Diana’s impact and the ongoing efforts to honor her legacy. The Duke of Sussex was in New York City to engage in various advocacy activities coinciding with the United Nations Climate Summit.

Earlier that day, Harry reflected on his mother’s influence while attending The Diana Awards, where he congratulated young leaders who are making a difference through various initiatives. He praised the award recipients for their remarkable confidence and clarity, saying, “I know that my mum would be incredibly proud of you guys…all of the award winners.”

Through these public engagements, Harry continues to highlight the significant issues of landmine removal, environmental protection, and the promotion of peace and safety for future generations. His efforts align closely with the values and causes that his mother championed, and he remains committed to making a meaningful impact in the world.
