Prince Harry’s Tribute to Late Mother Princess Diana During UK Visit

Prince Harry recently visited his late mother Princess Diana’s ancestral home, Althorp House, around the 27th anniversary of her tragic death. According to PEOPLE, the Duke of Sussex, 39, made a trip to the U.K. and stayed with his uncle Charles Spencer. This visit followed Harry’s attendance at the memorial service for his late uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, who passed away on August 29. Fellowes was the husband of Diana’s sister, Lady Jane.

The memorial service for Fellowes was also attended by Prince William, 42, and Diana’s other sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale. It was held just two days before the anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, who perished in a car crash in Paris at the age of 36.

Princess Diana is buried in the middle of Round Oval Lake at Althorp. Harry had previously visited this somber site with his wife Meghan Markle on the 25th anniversary of his mother’s passing. “No visit to this place was ever easy, but this one… twenty-fifth anniversary. And Meg’s first time,” he wrote in his memoir Spare. “At long last, I was bringing the girl of my dreams home to meet mum.”

He recounted in his memoir how emotional the visit was. “We hesitated, hugging, and then I went first. I placed flowers on the grave. Meg gave me a moment, and I spoke to my mother in my head, told her I missed her, asked her for guidance and clarity,” he shared. “Feeling that Meg might also want a moment, I went around the hedge, scanned the pond. When I came back, Meg was kneeling, eyes shut, palms against the stone.” Harry noted that when he asked Meghan what she prayed for, she said, “Clarity” and “Guidance.”

Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, paid his own tribute to Princess Diana on Instagram. He posted childhood photos and newspaper clippings from her life on the anniversary of her death, choosing not to include a caption, allowing the pictures to speak volumes.

Charles Spencer, who delivered the eulogy at Diana’s funeral on September 6, 1997, spoke with deep emotion and intensity. He described himself as “the representative of a family in grief, in a country in mourning, before a world in shock” and honored his sister as “the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty.” He also hailed her as a symbol of “selfless humanity.”

Moreover, Charles condemned the relentless press scrutiny that Diana faced, calling her the “most hunted person of the modern age.” He vowed to protect Prince William and Prince Harry from suffering the same fate. “She would want us today to pledge ourselves to protecting her beloved boys William and Harry from a similar fate and I do this here Diana on your behalf. We will not allow them to suffer the anguish that used regularly to drive you to tearful despair,” Charles pledged in his eulogy.

The memory of Princess Diana continues to be deeply cherished by her family and the public alike, as these touching tributes reveal ways in which her legacy lives on through her sons and their own journeys in life.
