Prince William and King Charles don’t always see eye to eye, apparently, with a new book revealing they’ve had significant disagreements—particularly over a helicopter.
In an excerpt from “Catherine, The Princess of Wales” obtained by The Daily Mail, biographer Robert Jobson notes that Charles expressed concern over William using his helicopter to travel with his wife Kate Middleton and their three children.
So worried was Charles about the frequent flying that Jobson claims he demanded William sign a formal document acknowledging the risks and accepting responsibility for his actions. This is certainly not the warmest of father-son bonding moments.
Interestingly, King Charles was following in the footsteps of the late Queen Elizabeth II on this issue. Jobson adds that Queen Elizabeth often voiced her displeasure with William flying Kate and their children the 115 miles from Kensington Palace to their manor at Anmer Hall.
The book goes on to state that Charles first raised his concerns with William after being diagnosed with cancer in February. Jobson suggests that Charles’s own health issues have heightened his worry about William’s safety.
Father-son conflict between William and Charles is not a new occurrence, according to the book. Jobson indicates that Kate Middleton often acts as the stabilizing force in their relationship.
However, Middleton has her own battles. She has recently emerged back into public life after months away due to her own cancer diagnosis. Therefore, it’s uncertain how much she has been able to mediate between her husband and his father.
The new book detailing Catherine’s life is expected to offer more insights when it’s released on August 6. It’s likely that the helicopter story is merely a glimpse into the complexities of royal relationships.
