Princess Diana Honored by Brother on 27th Anniversary of Her Passing

Princess Diana’s younger brother, Charles Spencer, marked the 27th anniversary of her tragic death with a poignant tribute. On August 31, the 9th Earl Spencer took to Instagram to honor his sister, who passed away in a car crash in Paris at the age of 36. He shared a photo featuring several photographs and newspaper clippings about Diana, including an article from her christening. The post did not include a caption.

Diana was the third of five children born to John Spencer and Frances Shand Kydd. Her elder sisters Sarah and Jane were born in 1955 and 1957, respectively, while Diana arrived in 1961. Charles, the youngest, was born in 1964. The family also experienced tragedy early on, with another brother, John, who was born in 1960 but died shortly after birth.

Charles Spencer delivered a powerful eulogy at Diana’s funeral on September 6, 1997. Speaking to a worldwide audience, he described himself as a representative of a family in grief, a country in mourning, and a world in shock. He praised Diana as “the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty,” and called her a symbol of “selfless humanity.”

Diana was widely recognized and loved across the globe. Charles highlighted her as “a standard bearer for the rights of the truly downtrodden,” a British girl who transcended nationality. He emphasized her “natural nobility,” stating that she was classless and that she proved in her final year that she didn’t need a royal title to continue her impactful work.

As the world bid farewell to the beloved Princess of Wales, Charles expressed his gratitude for the joy she brought into their lives, despite her life being cut short. “We will all feel cheated always that you were taken from us so young,” he said, “and yet we must learn to be grateful that you came along at all.”

His eulogy also addressed the intense scrutiny Diana faced from the British tabloids, dubbing her the “most hunted person of the modern age.” Charles made a vow to protect Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, from suffering in the same way. “She would want us today to pledge ourselves to protecting her beloved boys William and Harry,” he asserted. “We will not allow them to suffer the anguish that used regularly to drive you to tearful despair.”
