Princess Leonor & Infanta Sofia Recreate Iconic Royal Moment 12 Years Later

Spain’s royal family recently celebrated the country’s historic Euro 2024 win, with Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia recreating a memorable photograph.

King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and their daughters welcomed Spain’s national football team to the La Zarzuela Palace in Madrid on Monday, the day after Spain triumphed with a 2-1 victory over England in Germany. The players brought along the Henri Delaunay Trophy, and the royals posed with the iconic silverware.

Princess Leonor, 18, and Sofia, 17, recreated a photo they took 12 years ago, when they were just six and five, with the trophy. They donned Spain’s football kit for the occasion, mirroring their outfits from the past.

King Felipe, 56, wore a grey suit and red tie, while Queen Letizia, 51, opted for a scarlet Carolina Herrera dress. The football squad sported specially-made shirts with the number four, signifying their four European Championship titles.

Spain’s victories date back to 1964, followed by 2008 and 2012 triumphs, and now the 2024 win. This significant achievement was marked with celebrations and heartfelt moments.

While King Felipe and Infanta Sofia were in Berlin to witness the final match, Prince William and Prince George experienced a heart-wrenching moment as they watched alongside the Spanish royals. Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal for Spain in the 86th minute, leading to intense reactions from the British and Spanish royal families.

Before the match, both royal families posed for a photograph. Prince and Princess of Wales’s social media account shared the image with the caption, “May the best team win.” After the game, Prince William and Kate expressed their support for the England team, commending their teamwork and sportsmanship.

A candid photo of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, watching the match at home in Windsor, accompanied the message. Both children wore personalized England shirts, showing their support for the national team.

Following England’s loss, Prince William, who is President of the FA, released a gracious message for Gareth Southgate, acknowledging his resignation as England manager. He praised Southgate for his leadership, humility, and creating a team that competes among the world’s best.

“Thank you for creating a team that stands shoulder to shoulder with the world’s finest in 2024,” William said. “Thank you for showing humility, compassion, and true leadership under the most intense pressure and scrutiny.”

The celebrations were not just confined to Spain’s royal family but also highlighted the mutual respect and camaraderie between the British and Spanish royals, symbolizing the spirit of fair play and unity in sports.
