During the recent Eastern Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his support for Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee, citing her endorsement from President Joe Biden and her “expressive and infectious laugh.” Putin humorously referred to Biden as his “favorite” candidate, acknowledging that he was no longer in the race but had encouraged his supporters to back Harris.

“Our favorite, if you can call it that, was the current president Mr. Biden,” he stated with a grin. “He was removed from the race, but he recommended that all his supporters support Ms. Harris. That’s what we’ll do too,” he added, as reported by the Russian media outlet TASS.

Mocks aside, Putin’s comments also included a peculiar observation about Harris, suggesting her laughter indicated her suitability for the role and hinting that her demeanor might mitigate potential sanctions against Russia. “She laughs so expressively and infectiously that it means that everything is fine with her,” he remarked.

However, just a day earlier, a significant development emerged when U.S. prosecutors unveiled an indictment accusing Russia of trying to manipulate the 2024 presidential election. The indictment claims that associates of Putin directed Russian state media outlets to spread misinformation with the aim of influencing the electoral process.

In an operation to curb these efforts, American law enforcement officials seized 32 Russian-backed websites that were allegedly designed to bolster former President Donald Trump’s campaign. Additionally, two employees from the Russian state outlet RT faced charges for supposedly orchestrating a $10 million propaganda initiative utilizing American right-wing influencers.

Further complicating matters, federal prosecutors announced an indictment against Dimitri Simes, a consultant for Trump’s 2016 campaign. This charge alleges that Simes violated U.S. sanctions by serving as a presenter for a Russian state television channel.
