Rebecca Ferguson and Steve Zahn Discuss ‘Silo’ Season 2 Expectations

For Rebecca Ferguson, the star and executive producer of the Apple TV+ series “Silo,” the layered mysteries within the sci-fi drama evoke the sometimes perplexing rules of England’s national sport, cricket.

“Every time you think you’ve solved something, whether it’s an emotional mystery or a connection or a bond, there is another hinder and another hinder,” Ferguson remarked. “And that’s what is so great about these stories, it just doesn’t end. And when you think you got the story, it’s like cricket, you just haven’t. It just evaporates. Did that make sense? Like cricket, like the game, it makes no sense.”

Ferguson, alongside her co-stars Steve Zahn and Common, the showrunner and executive producer Graham Yost, and the executive producer and author of the “Silo” book series Hugh Howey, gathered at the Variety Studio, presented by Google TV, during the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the highly anticipated second season of “Silo.”

“Silo” is set in a dark post-apocalyptic future on Earth, where humans are compelled to live in vast underground bunkers known as silos to shield themselves from the toxic refuse contaminating the surface.

Steve Zahn, who is new to the series, described joining “Silo” as a “very unique job.” Despite needing to get up to speed with the intricately complex world established by Yost in the first season, his character’s interactions are limited. He primarily engages with Ferguson’s character, Juliette Nichols, due to the isolated nature of his own character.

“It’s a huge world, there’s a lot of people involved, there’s a lot moving in and out with characters and this and that,” Zahn explained. “But my character has been living alone for decades, and so I act with really one person here.”

“He’s weird,” Ferguson interjected about Zahn’s character. “He’s scary and weird.”

The second season also introduces a rebellion within the confines of Silo 18, which Robert Sims, the head of security played by Common, must contend with. While the role was challenging, Common embraced the opportunity to delve into the repressed questions and insecurities plaguing Sims.

“Sims is experiencing a lot of things that may not even come out all the way yet in Season 2, but there are definitely some questions, at least in the way I approached this season dealing with the rebellion,” Common stated. “It’s something being a part of the government [in ‘Silo’] for me as a person. Like, being a part of the people who established society and perpetuating the lies, or maybe some of it is the truth. It’s funny for me to play this character, but I love it.”

Ferguson appreciates how the series continues to unravel more mysteries and connections with each episode. She likens this complex storytelling to cricket, acknowledging that just when one thinks they grasp the narrative, something new and unexpected emerges.

Steve Zahn’s unique experience joining the show reflects the engaging and multi-faceted world of “Silo,” where characters and storylines continuously evolve. His portrayal of a solitary character adds another layer of intrigue to the already expansive narrative.

As the rebellion unfolds in Silo 18 under Common’s character’s watch, the storyline promises to delve deeper into the interplay of power, lies, and truth, making the second season highly anticipated by fans and newcomers alike.
