Rebirth Recognizes a Beloved Franchise Spinoff

The Jurassic World franchise shows no signs of slowing down, with a fourth film directed by Gareth Edwards set to debut next summer. On Thursday, Universal announced that the new film will be titled Jurassic World: Rebirth, along with revealing some first-look photos and plot details.

The plot synopsis for Rebirth confirms that it will be set five years after the events of 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion. The story will follow a group of characters trying to extract DNA from some of the planet’s remaining dinosaurs. This plot detail not only surprised fans but also raised significant questions about the franchise’s timeline.

One major question involves the possibility of Rebirth acknowledging the events of the franchise’s animated spinoffs, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and Jurassic World: Chaos Theory. Camp Cretaceous, which aired on Netflix from 2020 through 2022, followed a group of teenagers stranded on Isla Nublar during the events of 2015’s Jurassic World. Over five seasons, the “Camp Fam” becomes a tight-knit group and faces various dinosaur and human threats before ultimately escaping the island.

Chaos Theory, which debuted its first season on Netflix earlier this year, is set six years after the events of Camp Cretaceous. It follows the now young adult Camp Fam as they reunite to investigate a potential murder of one of their own. Showrunner Scott Kreamer revealed that the initial plan was for Chaos Theory to be set five years after Dominion. However, production delays changed that gap to six years, placing the first season of Chaos Theory one year after the events of Rebirth.

This timeline creates some intriguing implications, such as Rebirth’s notion that Earth has become “largely inhospitable to dinosaurs” except for “isolated equatorial environments.” Chaos Theory, however, shows dinosaurs scattered across much of the United States a year later—a topic warranting its own discussion.

Given that Chaos Theory’s first season involves the Camp Fam reuniting from their new lives, it’s unlikely that the entire ensemble will make the jump into live-action for Rebirth. However, some acknowledgment of Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory in Rebirth isn’t out of the question. Perhaps a line could mention the children rescued from Isla Nublar or include world-building details like the dinosaur dark web or dinosaur immersion therapy. Not only would this help bring the larger Jurassic franchise closer together, but it would also provide a long-overdue nod to the long-running spinoffs.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is scheduled to open exclusively in theaters on July 2, 2025.
